Luna Faye Naumer Mateos, 25, is defined as a weaver. They come from Spain and found their way through Europe to Amsterdam where they currently study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the department of text and textile since 2017. They identify as femme of trans experience, which is a major point for their work and research.
Luna’s practice moves around the tradition of textile making. Following the roots all the way to prehistoric times throughout time until the contemporary society, observing how time and space have influenced this practice and also how the practice and language has influenced bodies. From the domesticity related to textiles, to the broad social and cultural impact of it around the globe and the history of its developments. Looking at textiles as a subversive language used by groups of femmes and womxn.
Their practice is not solely based on making but also researching. Being part of the transgender community has provided Luna with a background to set their work. They are questioning continuously the cultural and political structures not only in womxn’s and femmes’ bodies but also in the textile craft. Thus they create contemporary lectures of the past, merging the creation of textiles with the creation of communities, conversations and knowledge.
Luna’s work is broad. Weaving fabrics, garments, tapestries, carpets, quilting… their interest in the possibilities of textiles is not only wide but growing. The tools to work with are as important as the materials. It all will determine the result of the work they do. Once a textile is done, it will start its new life, presenting in different spaces not as objects to observe but objects to live with. Aprons, quilts, fabrics for upholstery, towels or dowries. With time, the damage and use of the textile will share its own story.
